The tides, currents and water levels unit operates a permanent network of tide and water level gauging stations.
The network:

- Lake Ontario

- Toronto
- Cobourg

- 1 additional tidal station on Hudson Bay at Churchill, Manitoba
- 33 stations on the Great Lakes and connecting rivers
- was established to provide the data required by the Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) for:
- safety of navigation
- hydrographic surveys
- production of nautical charts and publications
- is equipped with SUTRON 8210™ Data Loggers, which record water level heights at 3 minute intervals using a float-counterweight driven encoder
- data are transmitted via telephone on a daily basis to a central collection station at our Burlington, Ontario office
